Leadership in the quiet hours

Last night, I found myself awake through the dark hours and into the early morning. Not because I couldn’t sleep, but because my conscience wouldn’t let me. Someone on my team was working on a deliverable that had to be ready by 8 a.m., and I knew I needed to be present to review instantly, give feedback immediately, and most importantly, encourage him while he worked.

Somewhere between midnight and sunrise, a thought settled in my mind:
I may not hold a managerial title right now, but if my own manager did this for me, I would feel deeply supported. I would love it. And that realization lit something up in me.

It made the sleepless night easy to go through.

Because I wasn’t just staying awake – I was showing up.

And I could feel that this person was going through a lot. So for me, leadership isn’t just about assigning tasks or checking boxes. It’s about ensuring your teammates can actually do the work because:

  • They understand it clearly
  • They feel ownership
  • They feel safe enough to show up fully
  • They know you’re right there with them, not above them

Leadership is creating an environment where people can deliver 100% because they feel seen, supported, and capable.

So wherever you are; whether you’re in your managerial era, or sitting behind a laptop as a junior staff member. I hope you use every opportunity to build yourself and build the person next to you.

Be that source of light people look forward to. Be the person who makes the work feel possible.

Titles don’t make leaders.
Actions do.
Presence does.
Heart does.

And sometimes, leadership looks like staying awake through the night so someone else doesn’t have to struggle alone.

With sincerest of hugs,
