Ainya, Mama

Grandma, I Love You

I had a conversation with one of my grandmas today, and it ushered me into a quiet realm of gratitude. The kind that makes you pause and truly appreciate the gift of having her here, alive, present, and still part of my world.

I’m always excited to speak to my grandmas.
To hype them up.
To give them big hugs.
To soak in their laughter and their jokes.

But today was different.

Today wasn’t about greetings or quick check‑ins.
It wasn’t about jokes or hyping each other up.
It wasn’t the usual lighthearted gist.

Today, she opened up about an incident – the challenges, the decisions she’s had to make, and the weight behind them. And in that moment, I didn’t just see her as “Grandma.”

I saw her as a woman.
As a mother.
As a friend.
As someone with her own fears, her own strength, her own story.

It reminded me that our elders carry entire worlds inside them; worlds we sometimes forget to ask about.

Mama your presence is a prayer answered.

I thank God for you.
For your life.
For your wisdom.
For your presence.
For the privilege of still having you here.

I love how you live every moment and remain grateful even when you feel limited.
Don’t be in a hurry to leave us.
God knows why you’re still here and so do we.

Ainya.

With a kindred smile,
