In the middle of a career journey

There’s something unique about being in the middle of your career journey. My goodness, the people in the middle experience some of the most challenging and interesting moments. At this mid-level stage, I find myself on a bit of a rollercoaster. There are days when I want to throw in the towel, and other days when I’m full of energy and get things done with ease.

But one thing I’ve learned, and I’ve heard it in different forms from different people is that being in the middle means managing in all directions. You manage up, you manage down, and you manage sideways. It’s about building those managerial skills – being effective with those you lead, collaborative with those on your level, and aligned with those above you so you can grow and learn from them.

I wish I could see all that I needed to see ahead of time, but I’ll say this: being the middle person is quite the adventure.
